Balanced Literacy

General McLane’s balanced approach to Literacy consists of a number of elements that provide many opportunities for Reading and Writing across the curriculum within each classroom (K-6).

This research-based instruction is direct and moves along a continuum from demonstration and “thinking aloud” to guided practice and ultimately to independent problem solving. Teachers are able to differentiate and focus their instruction from the results of the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). Students have access to “just right books” from each building’s expansive “leveled library”. The district’s literacy curriculum (Units of Study) is built around the Common Core Standards and easily accessed by teachers via the student information server (Power School).

This balanced approach to Literacy allows the district to “meet students where they are and empower them to be all they are capable of being”, which makes this District one of the best in Erie County, PA.
