January is Board Appreciation Month, and we honor the contributions of our school board members. The staff and students of our district are asking all members of the community to take a moment and tell a school board member:

VFW Writing Contests
Junior Allison Walsh was this year’s Voice of Democracy Essay Contest winner. JWPMS students Avery Young, Henry Salvo, Erin Mennow, Mallory Grucza, Abigail Walker, Lyra Prost, Abigail Hammer, Sydney Ferraro, Isabella Hinkle and Shannon Rohrer were the winners of the 2018 VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. Each students was awarded with a monetary prize and advances in competition.

McKean Run Club
McKean Elementary’s Winter Run Club is back in action. Lisa Roberts, parents and Edinboro University athletes and their Health and Physical Education students host an after-school run club for students in grades k-4. They will culminate the run at Edinboro University Dome on January 26.

Keystone Testing
Keystone testing took place last week and this week.

FBLA students move on to states
General McLane had multiple students place at the Future Business Leaders of America competition on December 17 at Penn State Behrend. All first and second place finishers are eligible to compete at states in Hershey, PA in April.

McKean’s Family Fun Night
McKean PTA is sponsoring a Family Bingo Night next Friday. The McKean Elementary Art Show is also part of Family Fun Night.

Sierra Seneta – 1,000 point milestone
Sierra Seneta scored her 1,000th career point in the 2nd qtr against FLB Monday night. She is the 10th GM girl to reach the milestone.

JWPMS’ Super Delicious Strawberry Pineapple Cake wins national contest
JWPMS students’ Super Delicious Strawberry Pineapple Cake recipe recently took home the grand prize in Dole’s “Get Cooking With Fruit Student Recipe Contest”. Students won one of the three National Grand Prizes and received individual achievement certificates, a school plaque, a $3,000 Learning Garden, and ten cases of Dole Fruit Cups for their cafeteria.

Caring Club sends cards to student
In December, GMHS’ Caring Club organized a school-wide Holiday Card mailing for Maddox Hyde, an 8th grade student from DuBois Area Middle School who is terminally ill. The Caring Club collected approximately 300 holiday cards to send to Maddox.

McKean Giving Tree
Last month, McKean Elementary hosted their annual Giving Tree. The students raised 170 winter items for SafeNet. Mrs. Iaquinta and Mrs. Renick coordinated the winter item drive through the Autistic Support Classroom.

Our staff rocks!
Two General McLane teachers were recently recognized. GMHS teacher Bruce Yates received the first Golden Apple Award of 2019. Jayda Plonski nominated Mr. Yates.
GMHS’ Brenda Hertel was the winner of this year’s “My Teacher Rocks Contest”, sponsored by Iszkula Orthodontics. Sophomore Natalie Senyo nominated Hertel.

Safety Training
General McLane hosted a safety training for many county school resource officers and administrators two weeks ago. NaviGate Prepared‘s Chris Porter spoke to the attendees about their newest feature, Reunification Module and the importance of planning and being as efficient as possible in a critical incident. Porter also conducted a mock scenario. General McLane School Resource Officer Jose Montes coordinated the event.
