The General McLane High School Library Information Center is an active library with an open–door policy. The library staff believes it is important to teach students and staff to effectively access, evaluate, use and communicate information. It functions to serve the interests of all students and staff members and should be considered the heart of learning at the high school. A carefully chosen, well-rounded, useful collection of all types of materials essential to learning is chosen by a trained and certified district librarian. Materials are selected to support and enrich the curriculum, to encourage reading for education as well as pleasure, to promote new interests and allow for intellectual, emotional and moral maturity.

Open from 7:30 am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday, the primary goal of the school’s educational information center is to implement, enrich and support the educational programs of the school. It is the duty of the library to provide a wide range of materials on all levels of difficulty, with diversity of appeal, and the presentation of different points of view.  If students require extended hours before or after school, the library staff will try to accommodate. Please see a staff member for availability.

The library has seating for approximately 90 people, allowing teachers to bring their classes in to do research while also allowing room for students doing private study. The library staff  assists teachers and students with all reference needs from planning technology use – to class projects – to research needs.  The librarian is available to instruct classes on the use of good resources and to work with individual students, as well as aid teachers in using technology and book resources. The goal in exploring cutting edge technologies and websites with students is to help prepare them for the college level research experience.

Library Collection
The high school has over 12,000 print books and reference materials,  25+ magazines subscriptions, local newspaper subscriptions, database subscriptions,  as well as numerous audiovisual materials and e-books.  In addition to the services provided, students also have access to 9 networked computers, a network printer, copy machine, digital still and video cameras and flash drives to use during the school day. (The digital cameras and flash drives may be checked out overnight.)

Online Resources
There are numerous online resources available for use in the library as well as at home. All of these resources can be found on the DESTINY home page.

Circulation Policy
Students need their student ID number to check  any library materials out. All library materials circulate and students can sign out up to 5 items at one time.
Books and e-Readers may be checked out for two weeks; reference materials and magazines are checked out overnight and audiovisual material are checked out by permission only.

Library Passes
The library is open and available to students before and after school and during tutorial and lunches.  Students are required to have passes to use the library during class times.  In addition, the library staff requests a student sign-in at the counter on the appropriate sheet. This not only helps with library statistics, but helps the staff  keep track of  the students.
