Academy of Medical Arts and Engineering

The Academy of Medical Arts and Engineering was created to prepare students for careers in medicine and engineering. Through partnerships with local businesses, hospitals and universities, the curricula will be enriched with hands-on activities designed to provide students with quality, live-learning experiences.

The Academy of Medical Arts and Engineering initiated a planning phase in 2011-2012 as a result of a district strategic planning goal to enhance STEM education. Partnerships were formed with local universities, medical facilities and engineering firms including Edinboro University, Gannon University, Penn State Behrend, LECOM, UPMC Hamot, Millcreek Community Hospital, Great Lakes Case and Cabinet, C&J Industries, NuTech, Great Lakes Automation, Deiss and Halmi Engineering, and H&H Machined Products.

The inaugural class of sophomores entered the academy in 2012-2013 and the second class entered during the 2013-2014 school year. Acceptance into the Academy is based upon both the student’s achievement in freshman level accelerated courses, and the willingness to commit to the rigorous academic challenges presented through Academy coursework. Students are invited to apply at the end of the freshman year. A maximum of twenty students are accepted each year.

Academy activities include monthly guest speakers and problem-solving activities, field trips to partner facilities and universities, job shadows in the junior and senior years, and an extended forty-hour volunteer experience between junior and senior year.
